Event Navigation

The George M. Murrell Home in Park Hill is hosting a May Day Celebration Weekend on May 2-3, 2014. On Friday, May 2, the site will hold its 4th Annual Education Day for elementary and secondary schools. On Saturday, May 3, the museum will present a May Day Celebration and Lawn Social for the public.

The Education Day on Friday, May 2, is open to all public, private and homeschool groups. Teachers may select to visit from 9:30am-11:30am or 11:30am-1:30pm. Approximately a dozen living history presenters will demonstrate daily life on a Cherokee plantation in the mid-1800s. Blacksmithing, fiber arts, cooking, and small animal husbandry are just some of the activities available. Admission is $2 per student. Adult chaperones are free. Teachers or school coordinators should RSVP to Amanda Pritchett at 918-456-2751 or apritchett@okhistory.org to reserve a time slot.

On Saturday, May 3, the public is invited to a May Day Celebration and Lawn Social that will evoke the beauty and color of Park Hill during its golden age in the 1850s. The event will be held from 12:00-4:00pm. Living historians in period dress will mix with the public in a social function reminiscent of the social galas held at the Murrell Home. The public are encouraged to bring their own picnic basket lunches and quilts and join the reenactors between 12:00-1:00pm for a picnic on the lawn. From 1:00-4:00pm, activities abound, including dance lessons, croquet and horseshoe tournaments, and lawn games. A maypole will close the event and commemorate the start of the growing season on the plantation. Admission is free.

The George M. Murrell Home is located 3 miles south of Tahlequah at 19479 E. Murrell Home Rd., Park Hill, OK 74451. For more information on these events, contact the museum at 918-456-2751 or visit facebook.com/murrellhome.
