Museum of the Western Prairie to Host Author Presentation by Sterling Evans

ALTUS, Okla. — On Tuesday, October 2, at 7 p.m. author Dr. Sterling Evans will discuss his book “Bound in Twine: The History and Ecology of the Henequen-Wheat Complex for Mexico and the American and Canadian Plains, 1880–1950” at the Museum of the Western Prairie in Altus.

Dr. Evans will speak about the many facets and aspects of wheat harvesting from 1880 to 1950, especially on the development of grain binders that were used before most farmers switched to combines later in the 20th century. Binders required twine, and the best source of fiber came from plants in Mexico and the Philippines. How that was discovered, how it was developed, what labor practices it required, how competitive it became and what changes to the environment were caused are all part of the “rest of the story.” Dr. Evans is the Louise Welsh Chair in the Department of History at the University of Oklahoma and holds a doctorate from the University of Kansas. He also is the author of five books and several articles.

This presentation is free and open to the public, and is hosted by the Western Trail Historical Society. The Museum of the Western Prairie is located at 1100 Memorial Drive in Altus. For more information, please call 580-482-1044.
