Spiro Mounds Seeks Vendors for the 27th Family Kite Flite Day

The 27th annual Family Kite Flite Day will be held at the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014. Each year, arts and crafts booths along with food booths tempt the hundreds of people who will fly kites and have fun. Native American arts and crafts items have been very big sellers over the years along with hand-made and home baked goods. Spiro Mounds is now accepting applications for vendors.

A small fee of $25 the day of the event makes an outdoor space available, said manager Dennis Peterson. There are very limited electric and water hook-ups available on a first come, first served basis.

Each year since 1987, the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center has hosted a day of spring fun and learning. Each year more than 400 individuals and families bring lawn chairs, blankets, kids and kites and fly the winds along with fancier kites flown by professional kiters. Demonstrations by kiters from Oklahoma and Arkansas will include stunt kites, parafoils and other fancy kites. There will be donated kites given away by drawing throughout the day. Members of the Spiro Boy Scouts will help people make their own free sled kite.

Along with the kite flying, younger kids can have fun in the children's area. There will be a sandbox where children can dig in the sand for shells, jewels, coins and even a special token that can be turned in for a kite. There will also be a bubble making area, which always draws a crowd.

If you would like to join the fun at the Spiro Mounds as a vendor, please call Dennis Peterson at 918-962-2062 or email at spiro@okhistory.org. The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center is the only prehistoric American Indian site open to the public in Oklahoma and is administered by the Oklahoma Historical Society. The center is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. Daily admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and $1 for children older than six. The center is located three miles east of Spiro, Okla., on Highway 9/271 and four miles north on Lock and Dam Road.
