In 1941 the town of Berwyn, in Carter County, changed its name to Gene Autry after the actor and singer. According to Jon May’s article on the town Gene Autry in the Oklahoma Historical Society’s Encyclopedia of History and Culture, “An estimated thirty-five thousand people attended the ceremony on November 16, 1941.” (link: http://digital.library.okstate.edu/encyclopedia/entries/G/GE003.html)
