August 24, 2019, 2 p.m.4 p.m.

Event Navigation

The Oklahoma History Center will host a book signing featuring two Oklahoma authors on Saturday, August 24, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Michael Dean will be presenting his book Oklahoma City Radio, which traces the history of commercial radio in Oklahoma City from its inception in 1920 to the present day. Deanna Tidwell Broughton will be on hand to sign Hide, Wood, and Willow: Cradles of the Great Plains Indians, which describes baby carriers of the Lakota, Cheyenne, Arapaho, and other Great Plains cultures. Both publications will be on sale in the Museum Store.

Michael Dean began working in radio at KBEL in Idabel while in high school, and has worked in radio, either full time or part time, ever since. For a time, Dean worked for the Oklahoma Historical Society and spent a great deal of energy researching various radio and television stations in Oklahoma, particularly WKY and KOMA. He contributed his research to the collections at the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Deanna Tidwell Broughton, a retired schoolteacher and principal who is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation, has used her interest in her heritage to learn about and craft miniature Native baby cradles. Broughton’s book reveals the wide variety of cradles used by 32 Plains tribes, including communities often ignored or overlooked such as the Wichita, Lipan Apache, Tonkawa, and Plains Métis.
