Event Navigation

Come and experience the history of southeastern Oklahoma and explore the old townsite of Doaksville, Choctaw Nation, at the annual Doaksville Candlelight Tours. Tours will be held October 11 and 12 beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour departing at 10 p.m. The tour will start and end with a short hayride under the stars. A guide will take visitors on a 45-minute walking tour through the streets of this once prominent town.

Doaksville was the ending point for the Choctaw Trail of Tears and became the Choctaw Nation’s first capital in the mid-1830s. The town served as a major metropolitan establishment in the region. Confederate General Stand Watie surrendered at Doaksville on June 23, 1865.

The charge for the event is $6. Children ages 6 and under are admitted free. For more information about the event and to make reservations, please call John Davis at 580-873-2634 or email jdavis@okhistory.org. Fort Towson Historic Site is located north of US 70 near Fort Towson.

Directions: turn off of Highway 70 in Fort Towson onto Red Road (next to the Corner Store). Follow Red Road for approximately one mile. The Doaksville Cemetery is located on the east side of the road.
