Ft. Towson Basket Making Workshop

February 15, 2014, 10 a.m.4 p.m.

Event Navigation

Ft. Towson is pleased to offer a class of instruction on traditional basket weaving. Instructor Linda Alexander (busy fingers) will teach the students how to construct their own basket from white reed. The class begins at 10am, breaks for lunch at 12 (bring a sack lunch) and then continues until 4pm.

For hundreds of years Choctaw basket makers have gathered the cane that grows along creek banks to create beautiful baskets. The cane was cut into smaller strips and dyed various colors. The dyed cane was mixed with natural cane to create multicolored baskets. Baskets were historically designed for such uses as vegetable baskets, egg baskets and hamper baskets.

Join us at the Ft. Towson Museum for this fun and exciting class on basket weaving and take home a basket of your own creation!

Materials and instruction fee – $35. Please make your reservations by February 6, 2014.
