Ladies’ Aid Societies, the Civil War, and Quilts workshop, Honey Springs Battlefield and Visitor Center

October 27, 2018, 10 a.m.3 p.m.

Event Navigation

Join us at the Honey Springs Battlefield and Visitor Center for a hands-on workshop on Saturday, October 27, 2018, from 10 am to 3 pm. We will explore the role of ladies’ aid societies in the Civil War.

When the Civil War broke out, neither the Union nor the Confederacy was prepared for the mustering of tens of thousands of soldiers who needed uniforms, boots, socks, shelter, and bedding. With scissors, knitting needles, and sewing machines the ladies of the North and South stepped into to help provide for the comfort of their soldiers.

Each participant will make a quilt square typical of the potholder-style quilts provided by the ladies aid groups through the US Sanitary Commission. The workshop will discuss colors and fabric patterns available, as well as how to choose modern fabric to make a retro quilt. All necessary sewing material will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own sewing kit. No sewing experience is needed.

Participants will leave with their quilt square, a pattern to make more, and a Civil War–era sock knitting pattern recommended for the soldiers. The workshop will be presented by Kathy Dickson, director of Museums and Historic Sites for the Oklahoma Historical Society. The fee is $30 per person and lunch is provided. Preregistration is required. To register, please contact us at 918-473-5572 or email honeysprings@okhistory.org.
