Voices from Hunter’s Home: The Women exhibit opens

March 3, 2020

Event Navigation

Women’s History Month at Hunter’s Home will see a continuation of  Voices from Hunter’s Home exhibits. During the month of March,  Hunter’s Home will debut Voices from Hunter’s Home: The Women. The site will offer discussions and demonstrations revealing how the women who lived on the plantation contributed to society and their home. Visitors can expect interpreters dressed in 19th-century clothing demonstrating crafts and trades on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Throughout the week, the home will include displays about the women who lived and worked at the site. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the mansion and grounds while learning about the work that went into the running of a plantation this size!

Featured ladies will include Minerva, first mistress of the plantation; Jennie Ross Cobb, photographer and first curator of Hunter’s Home historic site; Susan Murrell, enslaved seamstress who handled the clothing and fiber arts for the plantation; Eliza, the enslaved cook who ensured visitors to the plantation received excellent southern hospitality; as well as other women integral to the story of the home.

Hunter’s Home is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 pm.
