"Red", as he was known among his schoolmates and ball-playing friends, graduated from Central City high school in 1940 and worked in Waterloo for several months. He enlisted in the US Navy on November 26, 1940, spent six weeks at the Great lakes training station and had been overseas during the last ten months.
He was rated as a third class petty officer and was provision buyer for the members of the crew on the ship which was his home.
"Red" was better than the average as a left hand pitcher in the baseball club, played basketball to win, and also was a member of the school band. He was a member of the Federated church and sang in that choir.
He was born in Marion October 15, 1920 and was 19 years, one month and 22 days old at the time of his death.
