BURTON, RICHARD

Private, First Class, U. S. Army. Home address: Okemah, Okfuskee County. Mrs. Velma O. Burton, Wife, 115 South 8th St., Okemah. Born September 27, 1918. Enlisted November, 1940. Decorations: Order of the Purple Heart; Silver Star awarded posthumously. Served as Automatic Rifleman, his Citation with the Silver Star stating that, under heavy artillery and mortar fire by the enemy, he himself opened fire on the enemy and eliminated the hostile strongpoint thus making way for his squadron to continue the advance. He was later struck by enemy artillery fire in this advance. Died August 1, 1944, in action in France.
