Fort Reno, El Reno vicinity

Fort Reno was established in 1874 to provide security in the Cheyenne and Arapaho lands. Home at times to both the 9th & 10th Cavalry, the so-called African American "Buffalo Soldier," Fort Reno served in its capacity until 1909. At that time, the post was converted into one of two U.S. Army Quartermaster remount stations. In 1949, it was turned into an agricultural research station.

Fort Sill, Fort Sill

The Old Post District at Fort Sill consists of the original fortifications constructed in the 1870s and 1880s by the U.S. Army. The Fort was founded in 1869 in conjunction with the establishment of the Kiowa-Comanche Agency. The buildings were constructed by troops of the 10th Cavalry - popularly known as the Buffalo Soldiers. The Old Post at Fort Sill was an integral part of the pacification program of the U.S. government directed at the Southern Plains Indians.
