Langston University Beats the Harlem Globetrotters

The year was 1946, and after being turned down by the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma A&M, the Harlem Globetrotters settled on a game with the players from the Langston University Lions. This game would prove to have an outcome unexpected and rare for the Trotters.

Coached by Zip Gayles, the Lions had won 76 out of their last 77 games and were known as one of the highest scoring Negro collegiate fives. When they met the Globetrotters in March of 1946, they handed them a 74-70 loss, with Point Guard Marques Haynes scoring 26 points. Standouts Haynes, Lance Cudjoe, and Lawrence Cudjoe all went on to become members of the Harlem Globetrotters in 1947.
