Using archaeology we are able to know that before European contact American Indians lived across Oklahoma and hunted all over the state. Before European contact in the mid-1500s, native people inhabited present-day Oklahoma for thousands of years. Through archaeology, we know that the ancestors of the Wichita and Caddo tribe have been in present- day Oklahoma for more than two thousand years. Their impact can still be seen today in the ecology of Oklahoma.
