Letter Writing Activity

Integration allowed whites, blacks, and all races to be together whether in schools, buses, or movie theaters. Many people in Oklahoma, such as Clara Luper, and others nationwide worked to end segregation and bring about integration. All public schools, including those in Oklahoma, had to integrate their schools because of a court case in 1954 called Brown v. Board of Education.

Imagine you live in Oklahoma in 1952. You would be going to school at either an all-white or all-black school.

Write a letter to your representative about why your school should be integrated. Begin the letter with “Dear Representative.” Give reasons why it would be better if your school had both black and white students.
