We Remember...Before and Beyond
An Oklahoma African American History Coloring Book
The Oklahoma African American history coloring book evolved from our Oklahoma Centennial Celebration. Representative Anastasia Pittman initiated the project after receiving a comment about the need for such a learning tool for young students. It features the historical contributions of African Americans to the growth and development of Oklahoma before statehood, through and beyond our centennial birthday.
It is an awesome coloring book. More than twenty artists have contributed drawings which reflect their own unique and distinctive style. The artists include a talented high school student artist, professional cartoonist, graphic artist, portrait artist and gallery artist.
It is a unique history book. Research by Bruce Fisher, Administrative Program Officer at the Oklahoma Historical Society, will be filtered through a team of classroom teachers to ensure that the text at the bottom of each page contains historical content suitable for 3rd grade students. The final product will be not only useful as an art tool but also as a history and reading instrument.
It is also an internet based project. It is accessible to anyone free of charge. Teachers and the public may download one or all of the images. This is an ongoing project with regular updates and revisions added as needed. If you have questions, ideas or comments we would love to hear from you. For additional information, contact Bruce Fisher at brucefisher@okhistory.org.
