Born in Okemah, William Pogue grew up in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. He attended Oklahoma Baptist University. He got his Masters of Science degree from Oklahoma A & M (now Oklahoma State University). He joined the US Air Force and fought in the Korean War. From 1955-57 Pogue was a member of the US Air Force Thunderbirds. He became a pilot for Skylab 4 and went to space on the Saturn I-B rocket. This was the last and longest of the Skylab missions. Pogue spent 2,017 hours in space.
