Stalled by World War II, the Bureau of Reclamation finished a new dam on the North Fork of the Red River in 1947. The old dam that formed Lake Lugert was demolished during the project. The new dam, much larger, impounded more water--and the lake was renamed Altus. The town of Lugert, the original namesake, disappeared beneath the waters of the larger lake. |
