Marvel, OK / 1902-1911 / Canadian Co.

Submitted by Fred W. Marvel

Marvel was a post office in southwestern Canadian County, 1902-1911. Located 10 miles SE of Hinton, the town was established by the Marvel family. Early maps show Canadian River north of Marvel.

A Marvel family descendant described the area's beauty: "A portion of the flat land was home to the tall prairie grass. At times the strong Oklahoma winds could make the grass look as though a graceful dance was being performed. When the winds were quiet, these fields were alive with the unique lightning bug—making for an impressive sight. The low-branching willow trees shared the meandering creek banks with the tall cottonwood trees that reflected a visual shimmer as the leaves constantly fought with the strong Oklahoma winds."
