John and Mildred Perry

Submitted by Bill Moore

My grandparents, John Melvin Perry, known as Mel, and Mildred Lewis were married in 1922. Mel was born in Indiana, coming to Oklahoma with his family in 1910 at the age of 12. Mildred was born near Sayre in Oklahoma Territory during the year of Statehood in 1907. Mel began work in the Texas oil fields as a Roughneck in 1919. That was the start of a career in oil, working for ITIO watching the Oklahoma City Discovery Well and the Wild Mary Sudik come in. He then worked as Chief Carpenter for Cities Service until retiring in 1963. He and Mildred raised their children, Lynel, Pauline and Mary Ellen at their home in the 600 block of S.E. 32. Mildred worked at the Douglas Plant during World War II while son, Lynel served in the South Pacific.
