John and Hannah Rains

Submitted by David Rains

John B. and Hannah Rains were Payne County pioneers on a 160-acre claim located approximately 12 miles southwest of Stillwater. They arrived in 1889 from Holt County, MO, with their children Matilda Boyd, Ellen Ellis, John, Jesse and George. John built a log barn and house and farmed the claim until his death in 1904. Hannah died at her son John's home in 1926, leaving many Payne County descendants. They are buried at Mount Vernon Cemetery located one mile west of their homestead.
