Born in Oxford, Kansas, on February 19, 1908, Maurice Peter moved with his parents to Pawnee, Oklahoma, in 1910. He was a 1933 graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He devoted his entire 34 years of his life to serving public health in Oklahoma. With an MPH from Johns Hopkins, he served, consecutively, as Director of the Kay, Payne Okmulgee, Okfuskee and Oklahoma City-County Health Departments. He was board certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and Public Health. He was President of the Oklahoma Public Health Association in 1949. He died September 29, 1969 in Oklahoma City, while still on the job. The next day, the Oklahoma City Times wrote that he enforced public health codes with a "Will of Iron"
