John Jay Baxter

Submitted by Maryanne M. Fischer

John Jay Baster, his wife, Mary Christina, and their only child, daughter Anna Naomi, came to Oklahoma City, O.T. in a covered wagon from Afton, Iowa in late 1902. John had served the city of Afton as recorder for 16 yrs and was a former mayor, publisher, and editor of the newspaper. John's failing health prompted a move to O.T. The family lived briefly in a dugout while a two-story house was built. John and Mary celebrated OK statehood and the marriage of their daughter to John Howard McManus, formerly of Sparta, IL, in 1907. John Jay passed away in 1919 and Mary died in 1933. Both are buried in Fairlawn Cemetery, Oklahoma City.
