Official Register of the United States

Indian Agency Employees and Officials, 1816–1921

About This Database

This database contains the names of more than 89,000 individuals who were employed by the US government and whose work pertained to American Indian tribes or agencies in some capacity. The many job titles listed demonstrate the variety of roles at Indian agencies and other offices. Jobs such as Indian agents, commissioners, clerks, teachers, matrons, laundresses, housekeepers, seamstresses, physicians, farmers, laborers, butchers, blacksmiths, carpenters, tailors, marshals, and policemen are included.

This information was extracted from the Official Register of the United States which was typically published every two years. Names from registers published 1816–1921 are included in this database; registers list an individual's name, place of birth, job title, place of employment, pay, and where they were appointed.
