Throughout the year the State Historic Preservation Office carries out several regular and special events. In this section of our website you will find our Calendar of Events which provides a quick listing of our spring and fall workshops and the annual statewide preservation conference. Details about the programs and registration process for each event is posted on this page. Each May and December we offer a three-day series of workshops devoted to the SHPO's National Register, Section 106 Review (federal projects review), and federal and state tax credits programs. The May series is conducted outside of Oklahoma City, and we move it around the state to help make our programs as accessible as possible to our constituents. The December series is held in our headquarters, the Oklahoma History Center, in Oklahoma City. SHPO staff members present the workshops and detailed handout materials are provided.
The annual statewide preservation conference is generally held in early June. The SHPO partners with the Oklahoma Main Street Center, Oklahoma Department of Commerce and Preservation Oklahoma, Inc. to present the conference. Again, to provide access to as many people as possible, the conference is moved around the state. The program features content sessions, tours, and special events. Local cosponsors work with us in each host community and are key to the conference's success.
Federal regulations require that the SHPO have a state review board to advise the State Historic Preservation Officer on nominations to the National Register of Historic Places and other preservation issues. In Oklahoma the state review board is known as the Oklahoma Historic Preservation Review Committee (HPRC). We post the Committee's agendas for their quarterly meetings in this section of the SHPO's website. The Committee is composed of professionals in the fields of history, architecture, architectural history, prehistoric archeology, and historic archeology appointed by the Governor. The Committee meets on the third Thursday of January, April, July, and October in the LeRoy H. Fischer Boardroom, Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive, Oklahoma City. The public is invited to attend.
