In the Vernacular: Everyday Images of Oklahoma Life exhibit opens

June 22, 2020

Event Navigation

On June 22 the Oklahoma History Center will open a new photographic exhibit entitled In the Vernacular: Everyday Images of Oklahoma Life. A celebration of everyday image-making, this exhibit features photographs from the Oklahoma Historical Society’s collections. Visitors will see fun, quirky, and sometimes odd images of Oklahomans. The photographs on display were captured for a variety of reasons, including souvenir postcards, government archives, magazines, newspapers, and family albums.

Vernacular photography is a genre comprised of family and professional studio portraits as well as casual snapshots. These images are usually created by amateur photographers documenting personal history.

The exhibit will be on display in the Cooper and Gladys West Atrium Wing and Gallery. In the Vernacular: Everyday Images of Oklahoma Life is expected to run for one year. The Oklahoma History Center is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please call 405-522-0765.
