DESCRIPTION:The poetry writing and zine making workshop previously scheduled for Saturday\, March 2 has been canceled. \nAlannah Benae will work with students on poetry writing and walk them through creating a zine. Poets of all experience levels\, from beginners to long-time writers\, are invited to join the workshop. \nBenae is a local writer\, poet\, and writing instructor. She is an enrolled member of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe and is also Oglala Lakota\, Kickapoo\, Delaware\, and Cheyenne-Arapaho. Her work has been showcased in both in-state and out-of-state gallery showings. \nAlannah Benae speaking at a showcase \nWhat is a Zine? \nThe word “zine”—pronounced “zeen”—is short for fanzines or magazines. They are small\, often hand-held publications that began to emerge in the 1930s and became more widespread in the 1970s. They are typically created by a single person or a small group of people and are often photocopied and distributed by hand or by mail. Zines often have an inventive\, artistic aesthetic using illustration and words to express a point of view or personal experiences. \n
