DESCRIPTION:The documentary Sherwood Forest (2022) by the late Academy Award-winning producer Gray Fredrickson will air on OETA on Thursday\, December 29\, at 7 p.m. The documentary follows the story of Samuel Lloyd Noble and a number of American roughnecks who carried out a lengthy top-secret mission to solve the problem of oil shortages in World War II. From March 1943 to March 1944\, Noble and his crews drilled 106 wells in one year in a small oil field in Sherwood Forest\, Nottingham\, England. Their herculean efforts resulted in a yield of 3\,520\,553 barrels of oil\, which helped to fuel the Invasion of D-Day\, and turn the tide on Hitler’s campaign. \nThe production was made possible by the Oklahoma History Center and Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation\, OERB\, James Day\, and others. \nNoble Drilling Company crew at a well in the Ardmore area\, date unknown\, William A. McGalliard Historical Collection\, provided by the Ardmore Public Library to The Gateway to Oklahoma History. \n  \n
