SUMMARY:“Washington Irving and the Mounted Rangers” program
DESCRIPTION:On Saturdays\, October 17\, 24\, and 31\, from 10 a.m. to noon\, and again from 1 to 4 p.m.\, the Fort Gibson Historic Site staff will hold a come-and-go living history program to educate the public about early expeditions to Fort Gibson in 1832. \nThat year\, author Washington Irving arrived at Fort Gibson\, which was the last stop on his journey to explore the western frontier. He also traveled with a unique group of Mounted Rangers. During his time with Captain Bean’s company of Mounted Rangers\, Irving gathered the materials for his book A Tour on the Prairies (1835)\, one of the first written accounts of daily life on the western prairie and one that reached many American readers in the East. \nSite interpreter Seth Goff will demonstrate the Mounted Rangers’ equipment\, some of Irving’s equipment he brought as an author\, and survival skills practiced by all expedition members. \nThe program is included with admission. Interested guests should check in at the Palisade admissions office located across the parade square from the entrance gate. This program is conducted outside of climate-controlled areas\, so please dress accordingly for October weather. \n \n

SUMMARY:Sorting out Race: Examining Racial Identity and Stereotypes in Thrift Store Donations exhibit closes
DESCRIPTION:The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center’s traveling exhibition\, Sorting out Race: Examining Racial Identity and Stereotypes in Thrift Store Donations\, will close on Friday\, October 30.\n\nThis exhibition explores controversial themes and displays racially offensive images to stimulate a healthy community conversation about our ongoing struggles with race. \nEvery day\, thrift stores receive items with racial imagery—antique advertising cards\, collectible salt-and-pepper shakers\, vintage children’s books\, and mugs with sports team mascots. This exhibit asks questions: \n\n“Are these harmless reminders of past attitudes\, or do they perpetuate stereotypes about race?”\n“Should thrift stores sell these objects? Or should they be ‘sorted out’ of the resale environment and discarded?”\n\nSorting Out Race arose out of a desire to divert artifacts with racial content from thrift stores to an exhibit that would generate a healthy community conversation about racial stereotypes\, past and present\, in order to heighten awareness of our continuing struggles with race. \nKauffman Museum formed the Thrift Store Collection from items found at thrift shops in Kansas between 2010 and 2015. \nThis traveling exhibition was designed and produced by Kauffman Museum at Bethel College in North Newton\, Kansas. The exhibit team: Nicole Eitzen\, Jacob Harris\, David Kreider\, Annette LeZotte\, Paloma Olais\, Rachel Pannabecker\, Chuck Regier. Original exhibit concept by Leia Lawrence. \nThe Sorting Out Race exhibit is included in the museum admission at no additional cost. \n \n

SUMMARY:Addie's Trunk exhibit closes
DESCRIPTION:The Fred and Addie Drummond Home invites you to step back in time in October with a new exhibit that brings to life the ways women in the early 1900s carefully packed for long journeys. \nThe exhibit showcases Addie Drummond’s coats\, dresses\, hats\, and accessories\, thoughtfully arranged as if awaiting a grand adventure. Women of this era would have traveled with massive trunks\, some tipping the scales at over 100 pounds\, brimming with quilts\, sunbonnets\, and cherished Sunday outfits\, each chosen for both elegance and necessity. Setting out for a visit to a homestead required readiness for shifting weather and meant packing layers of clothing\, from sturdy corsets to flowing petticoats. \nThroughout October\, visitors to the Fred and Addie Drummond Home can observe these historic travel treasures and imagine the stark differences between journeys of the past and the conveniences of travel today. \n \n

SUMMARY:Lonesome Dove Photo Exhibit closes
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of the Western Prairie will host the Lonesome Dove Photo Exhibit through Saturday\, October 31. \nLonesome Dove—Larry McMurtry’s epic novel of two aging Texas Rangers who drive a herd of stolen cattle 2\,500 miles from the Rio Grande to Montana to found the first ranch there—captured the public imagination and has never let it go. The Lonesome Dove miniseries\, which first aired on CBS in 1989\, lassoed an even wider audience. \nCapturing the sweeping visual imagery of the original miniseries\, the Lonesome Dove exhibition presents fifty-five framed classic images taken during filming by Bill Wittliff\, a renowned photographer\, writer\, and executive producer (with Suzanne De Passe) of Lonesome Dove. The images\, however\, are worlds apart from ordinary production stills\, depicting an extraordinary union of art\, literature\, and history. \nThe exhibit travels to Altus in partnership with Humanities Texas\, the state affiliate for the National Endowment for the Humanities. \nGus and Call on the Mesa\, © 1988\, Bill Wittliff. The Lonesome Dove miniseries stars Robert Duvall as Augustus McCrae and Tommy Lee Jones as Woodrow Call. The Oscar-winning actors portray aging Texas Rangers who lead an epic cattle drive from Texas to Montana in the late 1800s. \n
