SUMMARY:Craterville Park Historical Marker Dedication
DESCRIPTION:The Oklahoma Historical Society will dedicate a historical marker commemorating Craterville Park at the Lazy Buffalo Cabins in Cache on September 29 at 11:30 a.m. Established by Frank S. Rush in 1923\, Craterville Park became the premier family entertainment venue in southwest Oklahoma. The expansion of Fort Sill in 1956 forced the park’s relocation to a site near Quartz Mountain State Park. A brief ceremony will feature Frank Rush III\, Mayor Scott Brown of Cache\, and Dr. Matthew Pearce of the Oklahoma Historical Society. \nThe Lazy Buffalo Cabins are located at 16260 Oklahoma Highway 115 in Cache. \nAbout Craterville Park \nIn 1923\, Frank S. Rush purchased several hundred acres in the Wichita Mountains and established Craterville Park. The park quickly became the premier family entertainment venue in southwest Oklahoma. Amenities included camping\, rental cabins\, horseback riding\, a general store\, a US Post Office\, an Indian curio store and museum\, a spring-fed swimming pool\, a restaurant\, a skating rink\, and amusement rides. The Craterville Park Indian Fair\, which featured American Indian crafts\, powwows\, and sports\, was established in 1924 through an agreement with Rush and a group of Kiowa\, Comanche\, and Apache leaders. The expansion of Fort Sill in 1956 forced Craterville Park’s relocation to a site north of Altus near Quartz Mountain State Park. \nAbout the OHS Historical Marker Program \nThe OHS Historical Marker Program officially launched following World War II\, when it was directed to select 100 people\, places\, or events important to state history. Today the agency maintains records for over 700 historical markers sponsored by the OHS or other organizations and individuals. In 2024\, the OHS began replacing damaged or missing markers sponsored by the OHS with money from the Legacy Capital Financing Fund. SUMMARY:Drummond Heirlooms exhibit closes
DESCRIPTION:From Wednesday\, September 2\, to Wednesday\, September 30\, family heirlooms belonging to the Fred and Addie Drummond family will be on display at the Victorian-style home they built in 1905. \nOnce a year\, the historic home showcases artifacts belonging to the successful Osage County ranching family for public viewing. During the month of September\, articles of clothing\, school memorabilia\, sheet music\, quilts\, toys\, and numerous attic treasures belonging to the Frederick and Adeline Drummond family will be displayed. \nThe three-story Victorian-style house\, completed in 1905\, features a central square tower\, a second-floor balcony\, and false dormers. It was deeded to the Oklahoma Historical Society in 1980 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. The Fred and Addie Drummond Home is located at 305 North Price Avenue in Hominy. \n

Women of this era would have traveled with massive trunks\, some tipping the scales at over 100 pounds\, brimming with quilts\, sunbonnets\, and cherished Sunday outfits\, each chosen for both elegance and necessity. Setting out for a visit to a homestead required readiness for shifting weather and meant packing layers of clothing\, from sturdy corsets to flowing petticoats. \nThroughout October\, visitors to the Fred and Addie Drummond Home can observe these historic travel treasures and imagine the stark differences between journeys of the past and the conveniences of travel today. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:\nThe Oklahoma Historical Society will dedicate a historical marker commemorating the life of Kate Barnard at Guthrie City Hall on Thursday\, October 1\, at 11 a.m. \nBarnard was the first woman elected to state office in Oklahoma\, and Guthrie is the historic site where she and other state officials were inaugurated on November 16\, 1907\, when Oklahoma was admitted to the Union as the 46th state. \nA brief ceremony will feature Trait Thompson\, OHS executive director; Connie Cronley\, author of the award-winning book A Life on Fire: Oklahoma’s Kate Barnard; and Lexi Kruse\, a high school student at Morrison Public Schools. Kruse will perform “She Would Not Be Silent: Kate Barnard and the Cost of Reform\,” which earned first place nationally for individual performance at the National History Day competition in Maryland. \nCatherine Ann “Kate” Barnard (1875–1930) was the only woman invited to address the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention in Guthrie. “Kate’s planks\,” as they were called\, prohibited child labor\, enacted a compulsory education law\, and created the office of Commissioner of Charities and Corrections\, to which she was elected in November 1907. She was the first woman in Oklahoma elected to state office and was responsible for inspecting more than 300 hospitals\, orphanages\, and correctional institutions. \nLight refreshments will be provided. A limited number of copies of Cronley’s book will be available for sale. Guthrie City Hall is located at 101 N. 2nd St. in Guthrie. \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Doaksville Candlelight Tours
DESCRIPTION:The annual Doaksville Candlelight Tours are scheduled for Friday\, October 9\, and Saturday\, October 10\, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.\, at the Doaksville Archaeological Site in Fort Towson. This annual event is a unique opportunity to experience the past through reenactor-led tours of the area’s history\, which this year will delve into Dr. Eli S. Penwell’s legacy. This walking tour moves through lantern-lit vignette scenes with several interpreters providing historical context along the way. \nDuring the American Civil War (1861–1865)\, northern Texas\, despite being part of a Confederate state\, was marked by suspicion regarding allegiances to the Union or Confederacy. Dr. Eli S. Penwell\, a resident of Bonham\, Texas—originally from Indiana—was suspected by Confederate authorities of disloyalty. In 1864\, Penwell and several associates attempted to escape to Union-controlled Fort Smith but were apprehended by Confederate troops and brought to the vicinity of Doaksville and Fort Towson. This year’s Doaksville Candlelight Tour will examine the motivations behind Penwell’s flight from Texas\, the historical figures involved\, and the ultimate fate of Penwell. \nTours will depart from the Fort Towson cemetery at 30-minute intervals. Participants will cross the WPA wall to enter the historic town and commence a guided walking tour lasting approximately one hour. The event operates on a first-come\, first-served basis\, with priority given to advanced ticket holders. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 10\, from 1 to 3 p.m.\, in partnership with the Vietnamese American Heritage Community of Oklahoma\, the Oklahoma History Center Museum will screen the film Year of the Cat. \nYear of the Cat (2025) follows filmmaker Tony Nguyen on an extraordinary quest to solve the mystery of his father\, lost in the chaos of the Fall of Saigon more than 50 years ago. Crafted as an investigative home movie\, this intensely raw documentary weaves together moments of humor and heartache\, offering an intimate look at how the children of refugees are shaped by war and loss. As Tony delves into his family’s history\, the film reveals the emotional toll we pay to confront the past—and the possibility of healing as we reclaim and transform our futures.  \nAbout the filmmaker\nTony Nguyen is an Oakland-based filmmaker whose work explores the Vietnamese refugee experience (Enforcing the Silence\, Giap’s Last Day at the Ironing Board Factory) and the overlooked stories of folks and communities in the Town (Fresh Frozen\, I See Me). He is the video producer for Asian Health Services\, a community health center with roots in Oakland Chinatown that serves over 50\,000 residents. His latest film\, Year of the Cat\, premiered in 2025\, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon\, and has garnered several awards\, including the CAAMFEST Audience Award and the Spotlight Award at the Viet Film Fest in Orange County. \nThe screening is free and open to the public\, but museum admission is required to visit the galleries. \nThis film will be shown in conjunction with the Our Journeys traveling exhibit\, presented by Vietnamese Boat People. DESCRIPTION:The annual Doaksville Candlelight Tours are scheduled for Friday\, October 9\, and Saturday\, October 10\, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.\, at the Doaksville Archaeological Site in Fort Towson. This annual event is a unique opportunity to experience the past through reenactor-led tours of the area’s history\, which this year will delve into Dr. Eli S. Penwell’s legacy. This walking tour moves through lantern-lit vignette scenes with several interpreters providing historical context along the way. \nDuring the American Civil War (1861–1865)\, northern Texas\, despite being part of a Confederate state\, was marked by suspicion regarding allegiances to the Union or Confederacy. Dr. Eli S. Penwell\, a resident of Bonham\, Texas—originally from Indiana—was suspected by Confederate authorities of disloyalty. In 1864\, Penwell and several associates attempted to escape to Union-controlled Fort Smith but were apprehended by Confederate troops and brought to the vicinity of Doaksville and Fort Towson. This year’s Doaksville Candlelight Tour will examine the motivations behind Penwell’s flight from Texas\, the historical figures involved\, and the ultimate fate of Penwell. \nTours will depart from the Fort Towson cemetery at 30-minute intervals. Participants will cross the WPA wall to enter the historic town and commence a guided walking tour lasting approximately one hour. The event operates on a first-come\, first-served basis\, with priority given to advanced ticket holders. SUMMARY:“Washington Irving and the Mounted Rangers” program
DESCRIPTION:On Saturdays\, October 17\, 24\, and 31\, from 10 a.m. to noon\, and again from 1 to 4 p.m.\, the Fort Gibson Historic Site staff will hold a come-and-go living history program to educate the public about early expeditions to Fort Gibson in 1832. \nThat year\, author Washington Irving arrived at Fort Gibson\, which was the last stop on his journey to explore the western frontier. He also traveled with a unique group of Mounted Rangers. During his time with Captain Bean’s company of Mounted Rangers\, Irving gathered the materials for his book A Tour on the Prairies (1835)\, one of the first written accounts of daily life on the western prairie and one that reached many American readers in the East. \nSite interpreter Seth Goff will demonstrate the Mounted Rangers’ equipment\, some of Irving’s equipment he brought as an author\, and survival skills practiced by all expedition members. \nThe program is included with admission. Interested guests should check in at the Palisade admissions office located across the parade square from the entrance gate. This program is conducted outside of climate-controlled areas\, so please dress accordingly for October weather. \n \n

SUMMARY:History Alive! on the Cherokee Strip
DESCRIPTION:Step back in time and experience life in the Cherokee Outlet during History Alive! on the Cherokee Strip\, a living history program at the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center in Enid. \nIt takes place throughout the year on the first and third Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The five historic buildings in the Humphrey Heritage Village\, dating back to the territorial era\, come to life with living history interpreters dressed in period clothing from the late 1800s. Attendees can sit at school desks in the 1896 Turkey Creek one-room schoolhouse while lessons are taught\, hear a pioneer tale from those tending their shops\, and watch as craftsmen and women work their trades. Visitors can step inside the 1905 Glidewell house or stop by the 1902 church. Guests can watch and participate in the different skills and trades of the time or file their own land claim at the historic 1893 US Land Office. A one-room log cabin\, built in 1900 by the Sneed family after the Cherokee Outlet Opening in 1893\, has been rebuilt on site. \nHistory Alive! began as a monthly program in the winter of 2019\, and has grown into a bimonthly event. Volunteers are always needed. \nPlan your visit! \n
