John M. and Bertha E. Moore

Submitted by Bill Moore

My grandparents, John and Bertha Moore, were both born in Arkansas and moved to Indian Territory (McCurtain County) as children with their families. John Madison was known as Matt. His father, James, was a blacksmith in Bethel. Matt married Bertha Tucker in 1919 and raised a family of eight in McCurtain County: Garland, Tilman, Orval, Estol, Irma, J.M., Jean, and Dale. They farmed and Matt worked various jobs including delivering mail, contacting with the highway dept. and working in the timber industry. Matt even came to OKC to help construct the Douglas Building before World War II. In the early 1950s, they moved to Washington state, following the timber industry work there.
