Loyd & Ora Hays

Submitted by Mildred Dick

Loyd and Ora Hays were true Oklahoma pioneers. Loyd made the Cherokee Strip Run on a white mule. He told how the earth shook when the gun went off to begin the race. He staked a claim 3 miles south of Ringwood. In March he brought his wife, Ora, and infant daughter to the claim where they lived in two tents for the first year. He bought a two-story house in Wichita, disassembled it, shipped it by train to Enid, took it by horse and wagon to the claim and rebuilt it. For an early cash crop they sold watermelon seeds to an Iowa seed company. They raised four children. They retired in 1945 from their Ringwood farm.
