Madison Carter Family

Madison Gilbert Lafayette Carter's (1839-1916) birth name was Cox. When he was young his parents were killed; he was adopted by an aunt and uncle, Elias and Elizabeth Carter. They moved from Carroll Co. TN, to Gentry Co. MO. He served in the Civil War, Co. H, 1st Reg, MO State Militia and 13th MO Volunteers. His eyes were damaged during his service. In Jun 1865 he married Almeda Bell (1848-1906). The couple had two sons and nine daughters. Madison and family got land in the Cheyenne/Arapaho land opening. He gradually became blind and applied for a civil war pension. It was finally awarded in 1914. He died in Arapaho at this daughter May's home.
