Herbert Ricker

Submitted by W B Clark

Herbert Goff Ricker (1903-1967) was a native of Chickasha whose immense musical talent manifested itself early. He was accepted as a protege by the celebrated pianist John Powell and attended the University of Richmond. After graduation, he studied in Europe, concertized briefly, and ultimately settled in Oklahoma City, where he was a major figure in the cultural life of the community, gaining national prominence as a teacher and continuing his studies in Chicago and California, where he was a valued pupil of Egon Petri, one of the most celebrated pianists of the century. Ricker was also a composer, and his SONATINE is perhaps his finest work. Many generations of his former students arise and call him blessed.
