John Luther McBride

Submitted by Ronald J. Owens

The post office in Luther, Oklahoma Territory, was established on July 26, 1898, and was named for the son of Charles Graham Jones, former mayor of Oklahoma City. John Luther McBride was born on November 22, 1898, in Luther, and the doctor who delivered him (at home, the usual custom in those days) told his mother (my grandmother) that he was the first white male child born in Luther. There had been several black male children born before him and all had the name "Luther" incorporated in their names and she should do likewise. And she did.
