Description of Material

The collection consists of the papers of Alzera Marshall Diggs from 1894 - 1953. The collection is primarily composed of her personal correspondence with friends and relatives, but it also includes her husband's correspondence and various publications. The papers document the lives of African Americans during the period between slavery and the Civil Rights Movement and include items related to the Washington Conservatory of Music in Washington, D.C., of which Harriet Gibbs Marshall, Alzera's sister-in-law and frequent correspondent, was president. Although the collection contains few sources other than letters, Alzera M. Diggs' communications with various correspondents living across the United States, in areas including Washington, D.C., Sumter, South Carolina, Wilmington, Delaware, Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles, reflect the character of the daily lives of African Americans across the country.
