Fire Insurance Maps

The Map Archive contains more than 300 maps created by the Sanborn Map Company dating from 1900 to 1960. The Clarkson Fire Insurance Maps Collection includes over 1,000 maps dating from 1892 to 1931, many of which are available on The Gateway to Oklahoma History.

Insurance companies used these maps to assess potential fire risk when underwriting insurance policies. Fire insurance maps include colors or symbols to indicate building materials and components of a structure. Records may include the original creation date and a “corrected to” date. The correction date indicates the original map was later updated.
