Program Descriptions

Workshops

Each May and December we offer a three-day series of workshops devoted to the SHPO’s National Register, Section 106 Review (federal projects review), and federal and state tax credits programs. SHPO staff members present the workshops, and detailed handout materials are provided. There are no registration fees, but participants must preregister. Workshops are held at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive (immediately northeast of the State Capitol), Oklahoma City. Visit the workshops page for complete descriptions, register online for an upcoming workshop.

Oklahoma History and Preservation Conference

The Oklahoma Historical Society and the SHPO present Oklahoma History and Preservation Conference in April. The SHPO partners with the Oklahoma Main Street Center, Oklahoma Department of Commerce, and Preservation Oklahoma, Inc. to present the conference. The program features content sessions, tours, and special events. Visit the conference page to learn more.

Historic Preservation Review Committee

Federal regulations require that the SHPO have a state review board to advise the State Historic Preservation Officer on nominations to the National Register of Historic Places and other preservation issues. In Oklahoma the state review board is known as the Oklahoma Historic Preservation Review Committee (HPRC). Agendas for HPRC quarterly meetings are posted in this section. The committee is composed of professionals in the fields of history, architecture, architectural history, prehistoric archaeology, and historic archeology appointed by the governor. The committee meets on the third Thursday of January, April, July, and October in the Dr. LeRoy H. Fischer Boardroom, Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive, Oklahoma City. The public is invited to attend. To learn more, visit the Historic Preservation Review Committee page.

Continuing Education Opportunities

Many of these programs meet the requirements for HSW hours/State of Oklahoma’s Board of Governors of Licensed Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers, and for PDH hours/Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. The SHPO will email certificates of attendance after the event, and participants self-report or document their attendance per policies of the respective boards. Planners will earn American Institute of Certified Planners Certification Maintenance credits for attending the statewide preservation conference, and instructions for documenting attendance will be provided at the conference.
