Still a working ranch today, Pawnee Bill Ranch now has fifty bison, fifty longhorn, and four Clydesdale horses that roam the exhibit pasture. Pawnee Bill's efforts to save the bison from extinction are evident at his ranch, an expansive property that is open to the public. Thanks to his work and the work of others, bison are once again an important part of the American experience. Conservation efforts like those started at Blue Hawk Peak Ranch and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge continue today. On May 9, 2016, the American bison was officially named the national mammal of the United States.
