Troubled by the rapidly dwindling number of bison, Pawnee Bill established his own private herd. He purchased a small number of bison from Missouri and moved them to his newly acquired Blue Hawk Peak Ranch near Pawnee, Oklahoma Territory, in 1902. When he was not touring the country with his Wild West show, Pawnee Bill would spend time at his ranch tending to the herd. By 1906 the herd had grown to sixty bison. A fourteen-room mansion was built at the ranch in 1910, and Pawnee Bill retired there in 1915. Pawnee Bill remained a showman even in retirement, hosting annual buffalo hunts and entertaining luminaries from around the world.
