Archaeology Day, Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center

May 6, 2017, 9:00 am5:00 pm

Event Navigation

Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center will hold its twelfth annual Archaeology Day on Saturday, May 6, 2017, from 9 am to 5 pm. The site will celebrate its thirty-ninth year of increasing awareness of Oklahoma archaeology. As a bonus, Archaeology Day will be a free day with no entrance fees, although donations are gratefully accepted.

All day during the celebration, items will be given away by drawing and birthday cake will be served. If you have artifacts, like arrowheads or pottery, an archaeologist from the Oklahoma Archeological Survey will be on-site to identify up to ten items per person.

Flint knappers (stone tool makers) Dave and Raydele Klostermeier will be showing off their skills. Blowgun, stickball, and Chunkee demonstrations will be available upon request. Lectures on local history and prehistory will be featured during the day. There also will be a guided tour of the site at 2 pm led by manager Dennis Peterson. Of course, the regular exhibits will be available throughout the day as well.

The featured artist for May 2017 will be Caddoan artist Chase Kahwinhut Earles. He will display some of his pottery and other art during the month, and will be at the site during Archaeology Day from 10 am to 5 pm. Chase uses traditional Caddoan throwing and firing techniques, and both Spiroan and Red River Caddoan forms and designs. He will display a new piece commissioned for the Spiro Mounds during this show.

If you would like more information about Archaeology Day events or how you can help, please contact Dennis Peterson at 918-962-2062 or spiro@okhistory.org.
