Civil War–Era Wooden Bench workshop, Honey Springs Battlefield and Visitor Center

September 15, 2018, 1 p.m.3 p.m.

Event Navigation

Visit Honey Springs Battlefield and Visitor Center on Saturday, September 15, from 1 to 3 pm for a hands-on, Civil War–era wooden bench workshop. Children and adults alike will have the opportunity to construct their very own Civil War–era, five-board bench. All supplies and woodworking tools will be provided with a $10 workshop fee. Light refreshments will be available for those who attend and participate in the workshop. Materials for constructing the bench will be supplied on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants will get to take home their very own Civil War–era bench! The workshop will be taught by Jacob Krumwiede, assistant director of the Will Rogers Memorial Museums located in Claremore and Oologah, Oklahoma.

Before and during the Civil War, large armies marched thousands of miles while stopping to rest along the way. Once in camp, it was imperative for soldiers to have simple benches to construct for a little extra comfort. They also were used in officers’ headquarters while discussing strategies for upcoming conflicts.

While at the site, take a tour of our new Visitor Center and temporary exhibits, buy Civil War–related items from our gift shop, and learn about our upcoming permanent exhibits. The battlefield also will be open for visitors from 9 am to 5 pm. For more information about this program or upcoming programs, call 918-473-5572 or email alynn@okhistory.org.

To find Honey Springs Battlefield and Visitor Center, take the second left after the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame and Museum located in Rentiesville (driving from the west). The Visitor Center is located on the hill.
