Spiro Mounds to Host Archaeology Day

SPIRO, Okla. — Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center will hold its 13th annual Archaeology Day on Saturday, May 12, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The site will celebrate its 40th year of increasing awareness of Oklahoma archaeology. As a bonus, Archaeology Day will be a free day with no entrance fees, although donations are gratefully accepted.

All day during the celebration, items will be given away by drawing and 40th birthday cake will be served. If you have artifacts, like arrowheads or pottery, an archaeologist will be on site to identify up to 10 items per person.

Flint knappers Dave and Raydele Klostermeier will be showing off their stone tool making skills. Blowgun, stickball and Chunkee demonstrations will be available upon request. Lectures on local history and prehistory will be featured during the day. There also will be a guided tour of the site at 2 p.m. led by manager Dennis Peterson. Of course, the regular exhibits will be available throughout the day as well. If you would like more information about Archaeology Day events or how you can help, please contact Dennis Peterson at 918-962-2062 or spiro@okhistory.org.
