November Living History Programs at Fort Gibson Historic Site to Focus on Washington Irving

FORT GIBSON, Okla. — The living history programs in November at Fort Gibson Historic Site will focus on Washington Irving and the expeditions he joined during the 1830s leaving out of Fort Gibson. The programs will be held on November 7-9, 14-16 and 21-23 from 10 a.m.-noon and again from 1-4 p.m.

Irving and others explored unknown areas around Fort Gibson in 1832. Historians say the group also explored present-day towns, including Guthrie, Arcadia, Oklahoma City, and Norman. Fort Gibson is mentioned in Irving’s book “A Tour on the Prairies,” which recaps his month-long journey in Indian Territory.

The living history programs are included with paid admission to the site. For more information, please call 918-478-4088. The Fort Gibson Historic Site is located at 907 N. Garrison Ave. in Fort Gibson.

The Fort Gibson Historic Site is a division of the Oklahoma Historical Society.
