Gender Gap on Wikipedia to be Highlighted in State Historic Preservation Office Webinar

OKLAHOMA CITY — The State Historic Preservation Office will host a free webinar in March for Women’s History Month. The webinar titled “The History We Know vs. The History They See: Editing Wikipedia for Women’s Stories” will take place on Thursday, March 19, at noon. The featured presenter is Brandi Burns, director of education and engagement at the Utah Historical Society.

Turns will discuss the current gender gap on Wikipedia, summarize Wikipedia’s mission, explain how Wikipedia editors build a consensus-based system and share a demonstration of how Wikipedia edits are made.

There are more than seven billion articles available on the English version of Wikipedia. Women are underrepresented in the free online encyclopedia, as only about 20% of the biographical articles are about women.

Register online for the webinar. For more information, contact Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer Lynda Ozan at 405-522-4484 or [email protected].
