Role of Arkansas Volunteers During Mexican-American War to be Highlighted in Programs at Fort Gibson Historic Site

FORT GIBSON, Okla. — On the first three Saturdays in May, the Fort Gibson Historic Site staff will host a come-and-go living history program to discuss the different types of soldiers and volunteers who were at the military outpost during the Mexican-American War. The program will take place on May 2, 9 and 16 from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m.

With the outbreak of the Mexican-American War, the regular enlisted soldiers at Fort Gibson were ordered to depart and march to Mexico, leaving the fort manned by a new group of Arkansans: Arkansas volunteers.

Historical interpreter Seth Goff will be dressed as an Arkansas volunteer and demonstrate the similarities and differences between Arkansas volunteers and their equipment, alongside the equipment of a 1840s U.S. Infantry soldier.

The program is included with paid admission. Interested guests should check in at the palisade admissions office at 110 E. Ash Ave. in Fort Gibson. For more information, please call 918-478-4088.
