Historical Marker to be Unveiled at Charles and Bertha Blevins House in Tulsa
TULSA, Okla. — The Charles and Bertha Blevins House, located at 1838 N. Norfolk Ave. in Tulsa, will unveil its historical marker on Saturday, September 19, at 2:30 p.m. The marker will commemorate the property’s role in Tulsa’s civic and political activities. The marker was funded through the Oklahoma Historical Society’s Civil Rights Trail Grant Program, which was created to support projects that highlight Oklahoma’s Civil Rights legacy.
Charles and Bertha Blevins contributed to the economic and social development of the Black community in north Tulsa during the mid-20th century through their involvement in local civic and political organizations. Most notably, the house served as a polling place for nearby residents, making voting more accessible and secure for Black Tulsans.
In addition to the marker unveiling, the Oklahoma State Historic Preservation Office will be in attendance to commemorate the property’s listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
The State Historic Preservation Office is a division of the Oklahoma Historical Society. The mission of the Oklahoma Historical Society is to collect, preserve and share the history and culture of the state of Oklahoma and its people.
