Celebrate Archaeology Day With Family-Friendly Event at Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center

SPIRO, Okla. — Celebrate Archaeology Day at Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center. This family-friendly event will take place on Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Activities will include artifact sorting, atlatl throwing and archaeological flotation demonstrations. The atlatl is an ancient dart-throwing tool that was used for thousands of years in North America until it was replaced by the bow and arrow. The flotation demonstrations will use simple equipment to show how archaeologists extract plant material and other items from the soil. The atlatl throwing will take place at 11 a.m., and the flotation demonstration will take place at 1 p.m.

Free refreshments will be served. The cost of the event is included with paid admission to the site.
