The Wayne McCombs Classic, 1880s-era Baseball Game

May 18, 1 p.m.4 p.m.

Event Navigation

Will Rogers loved baseball. “Baseball is our national game; every boy and girl in the United States should play it. It should be made compulsory in the schools.”

To celebrate Will’s love of baseball and its place in our nation’s history, the Will Rogers Memorial Museum will host an 1880s baseball game on May 18 at 1 p.m.

This is the fourth year for the Memorial Museum to host an 1880s baseball game, which originally began at the ranch in Oologah. In 2023, the game was moved to the grounds of the Memorial, on the hill below the tomb. This year, in memory of the former director of the J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum and avid baseball fan Wayne McCombs, the game has been renamed the Wayne McCombs Classic.

“Wayne was such a baseball fanatic. He had been our announcer the last few years and he really entertained with his baseball knowledge,” said Tad Jones, Executive Director of the Museum. “Wayne was also a very good friend and this is a fitting way for us to honor him and his love of baseball history.”

Previously the museum has brought in teams to play the game, but the goal is to field local players. If you want to play 1880s baseball contact Bryan Beard at 918-343-8113 or email at bryan.beard@history.ok.gov.

Come and enjoy baseball as it was played in communities before statehood. Admission is free! Popcorn, peanuts and crackerjack will be available for purchase. Bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy the sunshine.
