Women of this era would have traveled with massive trunks, some tipping the scales at over 100 pounds, brimming with quilts, sunbonnets, and cherished Sunday outfits, each chosen for both elegance and necessity. Setting out for a visit to a homestead required readiness for shifting weather and meant packing layers of clothing, from sturdy corsets to flowing petticoats.
